Tourism Malaysia

Tourism Malaysia is an entity that was established under the 1992 Act of the Tourism Council of Malaysia with the objective of promoting Malaysia as a preferred tourist destination.

It has been entrusted the task of increasing the number of tourist arrivals through promotional events and activities, while inspiring and developing the local market and conventions.

Recognizing the importance of tourism as a major foreign currency inflows as well as being a vital source of employment opportunity, the Government has attached great importance to the development of tourist products to increase continuously the quality of existing products as well as developing new products for capture a big chunk of the world tourism market. In this regard, a wide range of tourism products have offered and continue to be offered to the various interests and demands of tourists.

In 2001, the country recorded 17.78 million tourist arrivals with a revenue of RM24.2 billion (USD 6.37 billion). Despite the Sept. 11 incident occurred in the United States, Malaysia managed to register a higher growth of tourist arrivals for the year 2002 with 13.29 million visitors with an income of RM 26.8 billion (USD 2.7 billion). This was an overall increase of 4.0% purchased with the same period last year, thus consolidating the tourism sector as the second input of the local economy after manufacturing. The surge in tourist arrivals in 2002 was an unprecedented record. Proved to be an increase of 41.3% purchased with tourist arrivals when it was at its lowest point for the year 1998 when only record 5.5 million arrivals. If the incident on 11 / 9 and the 2002 Bali had not happened, Malaysia had achieved the target set by the Government under the Eighth National Plan 2002 of 14 million tourists.

The continuing trend of record at least one million tourist arrivals every month continue to the entrance of 2003. However, in view of the world unforeseen situations like the war in Iraq and the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Malaysia registered 10.58 million visitors from RM 22.1 billion in tourism revenues.

Today, apart from the Iraq War and SARS, tourism has been raised successfully. The period from January to May 2004 recorded 6.4 million visitors. This scope is amazing because it shows an increase of 67.9 percent compared with the same period last year.
