BRIEF HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

Sabah was known by the name of North Borneo until the independence of Malaysia. Both Sabah and neighboring Sarawak joined in 1963 in Peninsular Malaysia to form among all the new nation.

There are several archaeological sites and prehistoric consisting of tools and pottery which dates back to the Neolithic period. There are also documented evidence of some links with a lost kingdom located near the Kinabatangan River which may have lasted for most of the north of the island of Borneo, and that should have disappeared during the eighteenth century.

All this part of the island was known for its wealth of bird's nests so that Chinese merchants visited her frequently, from the year 700, in search of the base material for delicate bird's nest soup.

In fact, numerous natural resources attracted for centuries Filipino and Indonesian neighbors with its frequent incursions to seize territory in the north of the island of Borneo. Some of the northern islands of Sabah are still in dispute with the Philippines.

Sabah is, unfortunately, the poorest state in Malaysia and one third of its population lives below the poverty line, which is evident in the visit of some populations.
